20/04/2008 Ryan our little star

Coming eight months, Ryan was a lovely big boy now. He was very active yet contented, curious to everything, particularly everything with keyboard or has an edge: remote control, mobile phone, laptop, slipper, carpet, playmate etc.

He could stand by the bed for quite some long time, both hands holding firmly to the frame, which we found is a good way to feed him solid.

He was eagerly looking forward to learn to walk. He was learning co-ordinating the legs.

Ryan had learnt to comfort himself by changing attention to something else quickly.
Due to his father’s gross conduct, Ryan tripped himself, the head to the edge of coffee table on Friday. I was in a bit of shock when that happened, though it didn’t take more than a few minutes pacifying and walking around the garden before he calmed down. This is one most critical accident as we knew. It left him greenish swollen still visible two days later. In his brave new world to come, there will be more trip-overs and set backs, we hoped he will be a tough, brave man.

Ryan has many nicknames. Zhuzhu (piglet) and Baobao (babe) are two most frequent use ones. Last night we got him a new one ‘puppy wolf’, for the ferocity he had his night feed. Eyes still closed he screamed, for he needed the other 20ml missing.

This weekend we had another opportunity to look after Ryan 24 hours a day, which had been kindly taken over by Qiuheng, Danni’s mother. This weekend they went visiting friends in Hong Kong. We had a chance to re-warm the experience.

It wasn’t easy in the night. ‘Puppy wolf’ needed as least twice for water and a full bottle, it left us broken sleeps.

Eating as much as he needed isn’t a problem, though sometime I feel it maybe a little too much. His menu is like this:
1. three bottles (200ml) formula a day: 5:00, 13:00, 20:00;
2. a cup full of baby rice: 9:30, measures equal to a small rice bowl;
3. whole egg yoke 14:00;
4. a cup full of porridge 17:00
5. fruit: banana/apple.

I am thinking to get him off night feed. I fully appreciate the kind help Qiuheng had offered and how she had to endure of the sleep disruptions.

Anyone could copy me a few lines what that ‘evil’ Gina Ford (http://www.amazon.co.uk/New-Contented-Little-Baby-Book/dp/0091912695/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1208821774&sr=8-1) has done to cut off night feeds on babies, what 24 hours feeding pattern we should establish?

I'm not a fan of Gina Ford personally as her military routine didn't work for me and my baby...
1.Have you ever tried dummy? Reduce the amount of milk gradually and offer him dummy instead.It may be frustrating at the beginning but will eventually help him skip the night feedings.
It worked for my baby and my friend's.:)
2.Cluster feedings(according to Tracey Hogg) Try feeding him more frequently from 6pm-11pm so he gets enough calorie to go to sleep...

thanks for your tips beautifulday.

Ryan was recently picked up dummy again. He has been refusing it for a very long time. We had thought he would never like dummy.

He slept by in-law's side in the nights. She thought Ryan was doing well - only need a bottle by 5 or 6 o'clock in the mornings. Well, it maybe just an odd incident that he had woke up 4 o'clock when slept by our side.

Btw his last two feeds was normally a cupful rice porridge or noddle at 6pm and a 200ml bottle formula at 8pm just before went to bed.
