Fangyi wanted to find a ‘knowledge person’ to help her write a letter.
Fangyi, in her 50s worked as a nurse assistant with another lady Mei in radiotherapy ward 2, looking after 56 beds. The role set between nurse and personal carer, which is directly hired by the patient.
This role was outsourced by the hospital to a 3rd party company, which manages all nurse assistants directly.
Fangyi and Mei each work about 17 hours a day with no weekend break. They have been offered a basic wage of 720 yuan (50 pounds) a month based on 12 hours a day working shift. If one got hired by patient on temporary personal care work, it will be down to Mei and Fangyi to decide how to split the workload and overtime to cover each other. Money paid by the patient would be split 70:30 between their employer and themselves.
As a reference to the spending power in China, pork costs around £1.2/lb, milk 90p/liter and bus ticket 15p, btw 8-bedroom detach house with swimming pool: 500k pounds.
This has been worked ‘well’ for them until recently when the employer wants to change their ‘contract’ to a gross total wage of 900 yuan (64 pounds) regardless the actual additional hours they had to put in.
Their employer took advantage on their general illiteracy. There wasn’t any written contract but verbal one given to Fangyi and Mei.
Quickly a letter to their employer was put together. What they have done clearly broke the Chinese Labour Law regarding minimum wages, maximum working length and law bound contract.
Danni felt poor since around lunch time. She threw herself out and didn’t eat much.
In the evening, Danni pick up slices of bread and steam-cooked beaten egg.
My highlight of the day 1: Listening to Bob Marley ‘Hammer’ while everyone else is taking a fast-sleeping after lunch.
My highlight of the day 2: Went to see Ryan. He was as cheerful as ever. His rash subsided, leaving only two mosquito bites on the cheeks.
